How to set up a Bake Club in your community

Step one /Step two Step three  /Learn More

Learn to bake Artisan breads If there isn’t a Bake Club in your area (you can check existing clubs here.)

Question:Why not create one? The format is intended to be sweet and with 3 simple steps.

  1. All organisers (not members) must be registered bake Club members and ‘join’ their online group.
  2. I have no problem with people having a separate page for bake Club on their existing blog/websites
  3. Let us know if your interested. You can do this by filling in the e-form found on this website.
  4. I will act as a chaperone introducing like minded members in your area. I will also help actively promote your event on the website.
  5. This may take a while to filter through and obviously due to the nature of the internet I cannot Guarantee that two people from every area will respond to this project.
  6. So take the initiative. Do not stand around waiting for members to come to you. Start advertising & promoting your event Today.
  7. Ask your friends, Neighbours, parents & social groups where you are involved.
  8. Stick posters up in local shops and businesses.

You can muster members and deligate chores. However if you want to make a success by creating your own Bake Club. Then the emphasis has to be on YOU!

Safety:We will never knowingly pass your e-mail address onto any third party. This is For your own safety. Please be careful when contacting people on line.

Venue: Choosing a venue: Popular venues are;

  • Community centres for larger groups
  • Coffee houses
  • Espresso bars
  • Tea rooms and bakeries
  • Spare corners in restaurants
  • Spare open office space
  • Own homes

Wherever your event is held, you must make the proprietor of the venue aware that members will be bringing their own homemade cakes, i.e. not purchasing food. The benefit to the venue is that members will purchase refreshments.

Weekends or early evening mid-week are the best times for bake Club events. Daytime midweek isn’t as popular due to work and family commitments.

Avoid venues that charge for the room, except perhaps community centres who are raising money for their premises. Bake Club is all about communities and I want to do my best to help everyone.

Costs: A love of baking and the desire to bring people together socially inspired me to create the Bake Club and neither I, nor the organisers of bake Clubs events, receive payment for our events. With this in mind there should be no charge to bakers or guests attending your event. If the event is in your home you may cover your costs for refreshments etc, for which I suggest a couple of pounds per person. Please note that it is illegal to sell alcohol without a licence and you cannot get around this by claiming it is free from the charges. You can however ask each person to bring their own bottle.

You may need to look at having public liability insurance.

How many people?: Many bake club’s began with just a few friends and this is, in fact, the best way to start.

I advise that you have no more than thirty to thirty-five people at an event. Any more, and you risk losing the social aspect of cake bakers getting together and making new friends, which is why I created the club in the first place.

General information: I will post your event on the bake Club website and promote it on the Twitter social network. It will help if you can do the same.

All bookings for your event must be handled by you and should be replied to within 24 hours using the ‘Confirmed Booking’ email which I will provide for you.

A week before your event, send emails to people who have booked to attend, reminding them of the date, time, venue location details and that it is cakes only.

Bakers may attend on their own (with a cake!) but can also bring a guest. We are a sociable and friendly group but please don’t encourage guests without bakers (and cakes!).

Rating the Bake: Bake Club is all about fun and friendship. However a little competition can help bakers strive to improve their baking skills. I encourage bakers of all standards to bring their cakes along. We can’t all be perfect bakers but we can all learn from each other.

Having a theme for your event will make it more interesting. Maybe you could dream up a quirky word or phrase to describe your event, such as Cake Cornucopia. Check on our site for ideas and inspiration.
